How your donations are helping us do more at Hammersmith Hospital
As the dedicated charity for Hammersmith Hospital, we’re able to provide extra support for patients and NHS staff – thanks to your generous donations.
Here are just some of the ways your support is making a big impact at the hospital:
- We’ve transformed the main outpatients department, creating more comfortable facilities for patients and visitors waiting for their appointments.
- We’ve installed a new emergency lift, speeding up access to the hospital’s heart attack centre for cardiac patients.
- We’ve opened a brand new lounge area for NHS staff to relax and unwind as part of a £1.2m programme of improvements to hospital facilities.
- Through our arts programme, we’ve helped to create a warm and welcoming environment by displaying vibrant, colourful artworks in hallways, wards and waiting areas.
- We’ve delivered a range of creative arts workshops for patients and staff, with a special focus on the hospital’s renal services.
- We’ve worked with hundreds of dedicated volunteers to welcome patients as they arrive, help visitors find their way around and support NHS staff in many of the hospital’s wards and departments.
“The state-of-the-art phlebotomy unit is a great reflection of what we can achieve to enhance clinical facilities. It has had such a positive impact on patient experience and staff love the new space. Thank you!”
Karen Bradley, Lead Nurse for Clinical Haematology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Hammersmith Hospital: Historical Insight

- Its buildings were used during the First World War for military orthopaedics, before it became a general acute hospital in 1926.
- During the second half of the 20th century the hospital was renowned for major breakthroughs in the treatment of heart and kidney conditions, and in 1953 surgeons Prof Ian Aird and Mr Selwyn Taylor performed the UK’s first successful separation of conjoined twins at Hammersmith.
- The UK’s first heart-lung machine, developed by Prof Denis Melrose, was also used at Hammersmith Hospital in the late 1950s. During this time, Prof Melrose also pioneered a technique for safely stopping the heart during surgery.
- In the 1970s the use of bone marrow transplants to treat chronic myeloid leukaemia was developed at Hammersmith, with breakthroughs in the use of magnetic resonance imaging in medicine following in 1982.
