We’re the dedicated charity for Charing Cross Hospital

We’re proud to support patients and NHS staff at Charing Cross Hospital, which provides a range of acute and specialist services including:

  • expert cancer care
  • a 24/7 A&E department
  • the region’s hyper acute stroke unit
  • specialist neurological rehabilitation care
  • a renal dialysis unit for patients with kidney problems.

We’re grateful for each and every donation we receive to support our patients and NHS staff at Charing Cross Hospital. Your incredible generosity enables us to make a real difference, from funding improvements to hospital buildings and facilities, ground-breaking research and innovative medical equipment.

How your donations make a difference at Charing Cross Hospital

Thanks to your generous donations, we’re able to provide extra support for patients and NHS staff at Charing Cross Hospital.

Here are just a few examples of how your support is making a real difference:

  • We’ve upgraded the Riverside operating theatres, creating modern, fit-for-purpose facilities and increasing capacity for the hospital’s surgical teams.
  • We’ve funded improvements to the A&E, enhancing the clinical environment for patients arriving at the hospital’s emergency department.
  • We’ve transformed the hospital’s outpatient clinics, with brand new check-in and waiting areas for patients and visitors.
  • We’ve opened a dementia friendly garden, creating a calm and quiet outdoor space for patients with dementia or recovering from a stroke or neurological condition.
  • We’ve installed vibrant, colourful art in the hospital’s hallways, wards and waiting areas to create a warm and welcoming environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • We’ve provided creative arts workshops for patients and staff, including music and dance therapy, with a special focus on the hospital’s stroke and neuro-rehabilitation wards.
  • We’ve worked with hundreds of dedicated volunteers to welcome patients as they arrive, help visitors find their way around and support NHS staff across many of the hospital’s wards and departments.

“The new emergency department rest nest really has given everyone a relaxing space to get away from the hustle and bustle. Everyone was really blown away when they saw the transformation come to life - it really is a world away from our old break room. Thank you!”

Ffion Griffiths, Deputy General Manager for Urgent and Emergency Medicine at Charing Cross Hospital

A History of Charing Cross Hospital

  • Charing Cross Hospital was founded in 1818 by Dr Benjamin Golding and was originally situated on the Strand.
  • In the 19th century it was known as the actors’ hospital because of its links to West End theatre.
  • During the first half of the 20th century, staff at Charing Cross cared for casualties from the First and Second World Wars, including those injured in the Café Royal and Berwick Street Market bombings.
  • The growing demands on its services highlighted the need for a bigger site and in 1973 the new Charing Cross Hospital was opened on the Fulham Palace Road by HM Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Charing Cross has a proud history of research and innovation in healthcare and remains a centre for pioneering medical science today.
