Young patients explore self-expression at creative workshops
Young patients explore self-expression at creative workshops
18 November 2024
In August, we partnered with the youth charity Listen to Act to deliver three creative workshops for young people aged 15 to 25 receiving care for chronic conditions and transitioning into adult care.We invited young outpatients to participate in three art activities: photography, graffiti art, and music production, and take part in discussions facilitated by Listen to Act.
The workshops allowed participants to build new skills and express themselves creatively while building relationships with their peers.
One said: “I enjoyed all three of the workshops, especially the photography as it’s my hobby and I learned new skills and techniques. I want to be a cameraman in the future, so it was great to learn more about it.”
The workshops were designed after a project with the Paediatric Diabetes team at St Mary’s Hospital and consultations with the Young Adult Kidney Clinic at Hammersmith Hospital.
We also signposted participants to the 11-25 Hub, a resource for young people, parents and healthcare professionals to help the transition from child to adult care.
Alex Weston, Youth Engagement Manager at Listen to Act said: “It was wonderful to see the young people lean into the activities and express themselves without limits.
“This was illustrated perfectly by one of the young people who created a song in the final workshop with his lyrics which he performed and recorded on the day - and all with a smile on his face.”
We would like to thank Eva Jonas, Jon Rees and Rhythm Studio for facilitating these workshops.
These sessions are just one part of our arts programme supporting patients living in the North West London Community.
