New staff lounge at St Mary’s officially opens
15 October 2024
Last week we were delighted to welcome a number of our generous donors and supporters for the official opening of our new staff lounge at St Mary’s Hospital. The opening marks the conclusion of a £2.5 million staff spaces improvement programme, which also includes new staff lounges at Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals.
At the event we welcomed representatives from Brockton Everlast, British Land, Derwent London, CBRE and Savills, as well as from award-winning interior designers Taylor Howes Designs, who generously supported this project with their time and expertise. We also welcomed our friends at Howard de Walden Estates, who have generously supported the Children’s Services team at St Mary’s Hospital.
The honour of the official ribbon cutting went to David Marks, CEO of property developer Brockton Everlast, who was joined at the event by our Chief Executive, Ian Lush, and our Chair of Trustees, Dr Andreas Raffel.
"It gives you time to relax and focus on the things that matter most to you."

The new lounge is already a big hit among the staff at St Mary’s Hospital. A recent survey carried out among Trust staff revealed that:
- 95% of staff agree they like the new appearance of the staff lounge
- 77% agree it improves their wellbeing, and
- 77% agree that they feel more valued for their work thanks to the lounge
The feedback so far has been resoundingly positive, with two thirds of respondents who’d worked at the Trust before the lounge was renovated telling us that the new lounge had ‘improved their experience of working at the Trust a lot’.
One survey respondent said: “It’s a place to get away from the ward, nice clean environment. It gives you time to relax and focus on the things that matter most to you.”
Commenting on these findings, our Chief Executive, Ian Lush, said: “We’re very happy to be giving our beautiful new staff lounge an official opening, and it’s so rewarding to everyone at Imperial Health Charity to know that this warm and welcoming space is proving to be such a benefit to our hard-working Trust staff.”
Alongside the new staff lounge at St Mary's, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has refurbished the public cafe and made improvements to the kitchen to facilitate a wider range of food options for staff.
This work would not have been possible without property developer, Brockton Everlast and other contributors to The 1928 Project, which was established specifically to support St Mary’s Hospital during the pandemic.
