Bridget Riley

Bridget Riley has created three murals across the eighth, ninth and tenth floors of the St Mary’s Hospital QEQM building. Riley worked in collaboration with the building’s architects to create the first two murals in 1987, before returning in 2014 to complete a third mural on the tenth floor. A unique permanent showcase of Riley’s work, the 56-metre murals span the corridors on each floor. The coloured stripes were inspired by a trip she made to Egypt, as she explains, the works ‘aim to lift the spirits and to remind one of life outside the hospital, while in no way interfering with the essential activities of the hospital as it goes about its business’.

The new commission at St Mary’s has been made possible by the generous support of the artist. Click here to view more of her work.
