Imperial Health Charity is delighted to present Acute Colour, a bespoke commission for St Mary's Acute Imaging Unit by artist Kate Gibb.

London based artist and printmaker Kate Gibb was commissioned by the Imperial Health Charity to create a body of works specifically for the Acute Imaging department at St Mary’s Hospital.

Kate’s early studies in printed textiles fuelled her inherent love for colour, shape and texture which continues to provide the base to her works.  Following visits to the department to speak with staff and see the space, Kate decided on a group of works with deliberately bright and powerful colour combinations to counteract the windowless rooms and energise the space.  Recurring sunshine motifs can be seen in the images, which are overlaid in unique ways as the artworks develop.

For Kate, the process of the work is as important as the resulting print; she works over single pieces again and again with different colours, shapes and patterns to build up an image of complex and shimmering hues.  For Acute Colour, Kate chose to print directly onto wooden panels, to bring some softer, natural detail into the prints in contrast to the artificial materials used across the department.
