St Mary's Hospital

Patient Support Volunteer (PALS Team)

We are looking for volunteers to join our Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) team in a new role as a Patient Support Volunteer at St Mary’s Hospital within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Volunteers will provide a friendly and personal point of contact for patients in our wards, listening to any issues or concerns patients are experiencing and escalate challenges to the most appropriate member of staff of PALS team member.

What will I do as a Patient Support Volunteer?

  • Be a friendly and empathetic face for patients and staff within the PALS team
  • Be proactive in approaching and talking to patients during their stay in our hospital wards
  • Offer a listening ear, refreshment or newspaper where required
  • Build a rapport with nursing and other ward based staff in order to best help us meet the needs of patients during their stay with us
  • Escalate any issues, complaints or requests to a member of the PALS team as directed by the PALS Service Manager
  • Report back to the PALS service Manager at the end of each shift to record patients spoken to and issues raised

Roles are available to fill shifts at St Mary’s Hospital, W2 1NY

Commitment:

Ideally, we are looking for individuals who can volunteer for three hours a week on a weekday. Shifts are available Monday to Friday, either 9am-12noon or 12noon-3pm. We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of six months with us initially.

Why is this volunteer role so important?

We believe that volunteers can provide a huge amount of support to our patients, visitors and staff. By supporting the work of the Patient Advice and Liaison Service, volunteers will give patients and their families a chance to share their experiences, have companionship and reassurance during a challenging time, and will feedback to staff to help make improvements. Patient Support Volunteers will become valued members of the PALS team.

What will you get out of it?

You’ll be volunteering with a close-knit, friendly and welcoming team who are wholly committed to improving healthcare for our patients. This role will provide you the rare opportunity to gain an insight into how these areas of our hospitals function and to see how our incredible hospital staff work. You will gain experience in a hands-on patient-facing role, and have the opportunity to gain new skills. You will receive training, support from a dedicated Volunteering Manager and hospital staff, and a huge amount of satisfaction from giving back to your local community by supporting the NHS. In line with our volunteer expenses policy, we’ll reimburse out of pocket expenses for travel and refreshments.

Selection and Appointment Process

  • After the deadline, we will review and shortlist all applications received, applicants who meet what we are looking for will be invited to one of our volunteer selection events – running on Monday 11th December. If you are unable to attend this date please let us know in advance.
  • Selection events will take place to give us a chance to meet potential new volunteers and for them to meet us and see what we do. We make them fun and informative, and provide refreshments. Roles will be offered to suitable applicants.
  • The Volunteering Department will take up two satisfactory references, and an enhanced DBS check which we require prior to any new volunteer starting with us in this role
  • Upon receipt of those, the Volunteering Department will arrange for you to attend a Core Training day ahead of your start date with us in late January.

Outpatients Café Volunteer: 
Friends of St Mary’s Hospital

We are seeking volunteers to provide outstanding customer service whilst serving visitors a range of refreshments from the hospital’s popular Outpatients Department Café. With a patient, calm and friendly manner, you’ll assist visitors to the site in an empathetic and helpful way. You’ll be proficient in handling cash, with prior experience in providing customer service in a retail or catering capacity. There will also be opportunities to help fundraise too!

Location: Main Outpatients Building, St Mary's Hospital (W2 1NY).

Hours: Ideally we are looking for individuals who can volunteer at least once a week on a weekday. Shifts are available at the following times for this role:
Mondays: 10:00am to 12:30pm
Wednesdays: 12:30pm to 3:00pm
Fridays: 10:00am to 12:30pm and 12:30pm to 3:00pm

Commitment: We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of six months with us initially.

What are the main tasks?

•To serve hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and other items stocked in the café, carrying out regular audits of sell-by-dates

•You’ll need to be able to replenish stock, which may involve lifting and carrying. You must be physically fit to be able to do so

•Handling and counting cash

•Assistance with basic housekeeping tasks to ensure smooth running of the café 

•Ad hoc support with fundraising activities and charitable events from time to time

You’ll be volunteering with a close-knit, friendly and welcoming team who are wholly committed to helping patients and visitors. This will also provide any volunteer with experience in a hands-on customer service role, and the opportunity to gain new skills in a busy and thriving area of the hospital. 

In line with our volunteer expenses policy, we’ll reimburse out of pocket expenses for travel and refreshments.

Training provided

•All volunteers receive a one day hospital induction.

•Important safety topics are also provided via our e-learning platform for volunteers to complete during their first three months with us.

 

 

Shop Volunteer: Friends of St Mary's Hospital 

We are looking for someone to join a friendly and tight-knit team of volunteers serving members of the public, members of staff and other visitors within the hospital shop at St. Mary’s Hospital. You’ll provide outstanding and empathetic customer service with a patient, calm and friendly manner from one of the most thriving areas of the hospital site. You’ll be proficient in processing both cash payments and paypoint transactions using a till. There will also be opportunities to help fundraise too!
 
Location: The Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Building, St Mary's Hospital (W2 1NY).
 
Hours: We are looking for volunteers who can commit to volunteering once a week to fill either of these shifts: Tuesday 10am – 1pm and/or Friday 10am -1pm.
 
Commitment: We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of six months with us initially.
 
What are the main tasks

•To serve customers a range of products from the hospital, carrying out regular audits of sell-by-dates
•You’ll need to be able to replenish stock, which may involve lifting and carrying. You must be physically fit to be able to do so
•Handling and counting cash
•Assistance with basic housekeeping tasks to ensure smooth running of the shop

Shop Volunteer: Friends of Hammersmith Hospital

We are looking for someone to join a friendly and tight-knit team of volunteers serving members of the public, members of staff and other visitors within the three hospital outlets situated at Hammersmith Hospital. You’ll provide outstanding and empathetic customer service with a patient, calm and friendly manner from one of the most thriving areas of the hospital site. You’ll be proficient in or willing to learn to process payments using a till. There will also be opportunities to help fundraise too!
 
Location: Hammersmith Hospital, Du Cane Road, London (W12 0HS)
 
Hours: Ideally we are looking for individuals who can volunteer at least once a week on a weekday, either from 09:00-13.00 or 13.00-17.00.
 
Commitment: We ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of six months with us initially.
 
What are the main tasks

Events Volunteer

Join our winning team, become an Events Volunteer. Our Events Volunteer scheme is a new way to volunteer with Imperial Health Charity supporting our efforts to raise funds to improve patient care and support staff development at the five hospitals within the NHS Trust.

Our Events Volunteer scheme is a flexible way to volunteer with Imperial Health Charity supporting our efforts to raise funds to improve patient care and support staff development at the five hospitals within the NHS Trust.

We are looking for Events Volunteers for a variety of events taking place on various days and times throughout the year. Some take place during the week while others are held at weekends, so regardless of your availability there will be an event for you to get involved with.

What you’ll get as an Events Volunteer:

  • Event t-shirt
  • Refreshments including meals where appropriate
  • Certificate
  • Other goodies specific to each event where available

Once we’ve received your application form we will send you an Events Volunteer briefing pack with all of the information about us and our events to get you started. Just read through, complete the briefing questionnaire and send it back us. In the week leading up to the event we will email you with all the final joining instructions so you know where to go, what to wear and what time to arrive – so be sure to check your emails in the lead up.
