Major Trauma Centre

About the Major Trauma Centre

The major trauma centre (MTC) at St Mary’s is one of four trauma centres in London and was the first centre to open as part of a trauma network across the UK. It covers the widest geographical area in London of the four and also cares for patients from all parts of the UK and abroad.
Our centre was recently rated by NHS England as the best of 25 centres in the UK!

Despite only becoming fully operational in 2011, the success of the major trauma centre has put our trauma team under more pressure than ever. We’ve seen a dramatic rise in activity – from an average of five trauma calls per week to over 40, with peaks of 60 and an increase in the severity of injured patients.

Specialists from the Emergency Department, Paediatrics, Critical Care, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, the Cardiothoracic and Anaesthetics departments come together to save and help rebuild lives. Despite the increased complexity of the patients, St Mary’s MTC shows a consistently high survival rate compared to the UK average: three extra survivors for every 100 patients treated.

St Mary’s, as part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, is proud to rank third for the lowest mortality rates in the UK among UK NHS Trusts and is dedicated to continuing to improve on every level to better patients’ chances of survival and successful rehabilitation.
